What is service in the eyes of Christ? What does humble service look like according to the word? In Philippians Chapter 2 verse 1 Paul says “If there is any encouragement in Christ. (meaning that Jesus’ works as a servant should encourage you because He lived a perfect life) complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, and being in full accord.” What does it mean to be of one mind? To be of one mind means to serve humbly alongside your brothers and sisters in Christ. Verse 3 says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourself.” Serving doesn’t just mean to work, it means humbling yourself before God, putting others before yourself, counting others as more significant than you. Jesus did exactly that when he came down to earth as a human and “emptied” himself. Jesus didn’t come to be a rich king, He came to serve, to put others above himself. He served to the point of dying on a cross for us. That is why his name is above every other name. “At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is lord.” Paul encourages us to work much more in the presence of none than in the presence of others for it is real service. He calls the people out because many serve to take the glory for themselves and to be known for serving. But Jesus says serve anonymously. Serve when no ones watching.
