Being a lukewarm Christian is something that most do not recognize in themselves, that’s why it’s so dangerous. You can go to church, serve, and give without realizing your need for Jesus. In the book of Revelation, Jesus addresses this problem in Laodicea. Revelation 3:15-16 says “I know your works, you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth.” In this time, lukewarm water was known for being disease ridden and not safe to drink. When it was hot they drank cold water, and when it was cold they drank hot water. From a Worldly perspective the Laodiceans may have seemed high class, but Jesus saw them for what they truly were, disease ridden lost people. They were spiritually blind. So why is being lukewarm a bad thing? Jesus says “Behold I stand at the door and knock.” Being lukewarm would be like claiming that Jesus is there, but not opening the door and letting Him inside. Why can’t we be of the World and of God at the same time? Why can’t we open the door a little bit and take a look then shut it back? In the book of John Jesus says “I am the light of the World.” Where there is light, there is no darkness. When you walk into the light, you leave the darkness for good. A relationship with Jesus is a permanent switch, it’s not temporary. Jesus even says that it is better to be cold than be lukewarm. Because when you are at your worst (cold) you are more likely to notice your need for Jesus. When you are lukewarm, you know just enough to trick yourself into thinking you are ok when truly you’re broken. So, we need to examine our hearts. Are you living your life to please God, or the World? God should be at the center of our lives, at the center of our decisions. It may seem like no harm now to do what you want outside of church and straddle that line. You can act like a christian all you want but when you stand before God He will say depart from Me for I never knew you. So take a look at your heart, what truly drives your life?
