What does it mean to be in the World and not of the World? First, we have to look at what it means to be Worldly. Being worldly means you do things for the world, not God, your decisions are based off of Worldly goals, you live to please the World, and the World is where your judgement comes from, your rules. Being of God means that you turn from the ways of the World to follow Him. Following Jesus means obeying Him and trusting in Him even when the World hates you, and you will be hated. It may seem simple and easy to not be Worldly, but being Worldly is a struggle every single follower of Jesus has every single day. Yes being saved by Jesus Christ is a switch, but a relationship with Him is a lifetime of waging war on sin. It can be so easy to fall into the ways of the World especially when you think you aren’t. A lot of people set a line for themselves that they can’t cross and as long as they stay behind that line they’re fine. They think that they can be of the World and of God at the same time, well, you CAN’T. This is what you would call a lukewarm Christian. Being a Christian isn’t just believing in Jesus, by that standard, satan’s a christian. If you are of God you are not of the World. You are either 100% for God or you aren’t. There is no in between. Satan is the in between and he will do anything he can to trap you in this mindset of Worldly pleasures and instant gratification. Satan’s goal isn’t for you to keep sinning, his goal is for you to quit, for you to stop running back to God. 1st Peter 5:7 says “Cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.” So what does being in the world mean? How can we be in the world and not be of it? look at Jesus. He lived a perfect life and He hung around Worldly people all the time. He was with them, but He wasn’t tempted by them. This is what God calls us to do, to go out and make disciples in the World. If we are secure in Jesus, then we will not let the World tempt us with things we know are not going to give us near the amount of joy Jesus does. But when you do go out into the World to share the gospel, be careful. When you share the gospel with others, you mustn’t forget to share it with yourself. It can be so easy to go through the motions and act like you’ve already heard all this stuff so you don’t need to hear it again. But we need to renew our minds even of the simplest truths each and every day. So go out and spread the good news of the gospel. Let Jesus’ word be written on your heart.
